The
Unique Yankee Inn Opens its Meditation Rose Gardens
to the Public
|
| The public is invited to come by, relax and enjoy he
beautiful perennial gardens surrounding the Unique Yankee
Inn, formerly a Bed & Breakfast, on Rutherford Island. The three acre
Inn setting is at the highest point of Rutherford
Island overlooking John's Bay, the Gulf of Maine, and
Christmas Cove. Christmas Cove, on the Pemaquid Peninsula,
with its historic "cottages," is famous as a
Maine summer vacation colony and destination. |

Watch this beautifully
designed meditation garden bloom and change with the
seasons.

The centerpiece of the now-public gardens is a "floating"
four-section rose garden. Richard Munson, the innkeepers'
gardener, refers to this garden as "floating"
because it is "raised" above a solid granite
ledge. Nine hundred square feet of the ancient granite
ledge has been excavated and left exposed so that guest
and visitors could be "awed" by the fascinating
ledge outcroppings which geologist estimate to be between
380 and 450 million years old. The "Bucksport Ledge"
on the island predates the formation of the Atlantic
Ocean.
The floating rose garden features 75 beautiful hybrid
tea and floribunda roses in an exquisite range of colors.
|
| Many of David
Austin antique roses and the patented varieties have been
especially hybridized to withstand Maine's harsh winters.

It's "On The House"
In addition to the 75 roses in the "floating"
meditation garden there are 80 rugosa roses and over
200 other perennials and countless annuals. Guest and
the public alike are also invited to ascend the 55 steps
up to the ocean observatory. The view is "on the
house," so to speak, as the ocean observatory (50'
up) is a "house on a house" with 11 windows
that enable a 360-degree view of not only the surrounding
gardens but also John's Bay and the Gulf of Maine clear
out to Monhegan Island over the top of the Pemaquid
Peninsula.
